Pluriversal Threads of Empathy

Caya Episode 16

The Hello Frequency Podcast acknowledges the Tainui people of the Waikato region, where it was recorded. Respects to elders past, present, and emerging.

Welcome to The Hello Frequency, My Dear Listeners: I am your host, Caya.

In this soul-pleasing episode with Rafiqah, we weave pluriversal threads of empathy, rooted in Filipino cultural traditions. Our shared advocacy work aims to uplift marginalised sections of Aotearoa society. Rafiqah brings profound insights based on the following concepts interconnected with empathy:

  • Pakikiramay (sympathy/condolences)
  • Makikipagkapwa-tao (shared humanity)
  • Pakikisama (getting along with each other)
  • Utang na loob (debt of gratitude)

We also discuss empathy as a double-edged sword, where it can be taken for granted and used to patronise those who are less powerful.

I am delighted to share this episode, which I believe will positively influence you. As we navigate one of the challenging times in Aotearoa’s history, especially for former refugees and people of colour migrant communities, I recognise that nurturing empathy, exploring connections, and spreading love and light through this platform may not be accessible to everyone. Therefore, I am deeply grateful to those who can offer wisdom in this space at this critical juncture.

Thank you all for your support and for joining us in this journey of empathy and connection.
